Review your mortgage before deciding what changes
If your current deal is ending or your circumstances have changed, you may want to compare staying with your lender with moving to another lender. Neither route is automatically the right choice.
Look beyond the headline rate
Consider fees, early repayment charges, incentives, repayment flexibility and the interest cost over the relevant period. Extending the term may reduce monthly payments but increase the amount of interest paid overall.
Your circumstances still matter
A new lender may assess your income, expenditure, credit history and property. A product change with your existing lender may have different requirements. Ask what checks and costs apply to each option.
If you are thinking about borrowing more
Extra borrowing increases your secured debt. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost.
